Hi all,
New user here on FCA, but followed with interest (and many times a chuckle) when it was fish-tails. I've spent the last year 'shipwrecked' in Kansas, but am back and ready to wet a line. Going fishing tomorrow and will post results, pics. I'll probably be in the Sister's Creek area. If you see me, honk, wave, yell, throw a beer, whatever. I'm in an all white pathfinder 2000.
See you on the water!

I started the new year by going surf fishing at the south end of Amelia Island. Winds were from the north east at around 20 I would guess and really churning up the water. My initial spot that I wanted to fish was inaccesible by 4x4 due to the water being pushed up far on the beach. I settled for fishing the sound until some of the water receded as the tide went out. After an hour of nothing and not seeing anyone catch or even get a bite I went back to my previous spot. I could finally get on the beach. The water was still very rough, and the currents were so strong that my 4 ounce sputnik wouldn't hold and just washed down the beach. I checked my tackle box but didn't have anything heavier than 4 ounces, so I had to double up. That did the trick. Another hour went by and still nothing, but then again I really wasn't expecting to do great anyway, given the conditions.
Finally I had a hit and when I reeled in, a whiting too small to keep was on the other end. But, at least there were signs of life. I pretty much had this beach all to myself until I met another angler, Kipp, who had showed up. Cool, somebody to talk to. He was just starting out surf fishing so I showed him my rigs and shared some of the tips I had learned in the past from Capt Jack. The fishing picked up finally after several hours of nothing. I fished until about 5:30 and went home with six nice whiting to 16 inches, not stellar but a good start for the new year.
I hope your New Year started out well. Fish On!

Mark, It was nice to meet you today while fishing on the beach. Thanks for the tips on rigging the leader for the Whiting rig. I will make a few up and try them next time I go out. The guy I was fishing with is new to surf fishing and although we didnt catch anything today had a great time learning the ropes on the beach also. I really like the web site and plan to visit it often. I need all the help I can get learning how to catch fish off the beach. Thanks again.
Kipp

After a wonderful prime rib Christmas dinner yesterday and some of Angie's Blueberry Congel last night, (a fantastic cream cheese desert) I got up this morning, albeit a bit late, with a hankering to do some fishing. Angela had a doctors appointment, and daughter had advised me she was sleeping in today. Well, OK with me. I'll just tippy toe as I head out to the garage and grab my gear. I still had some mud minnows left over from last Friday. Talk about hardy. If you put fresh creek water in the bucket every other day they'll keep for quite some time without an aerator. It was foggy out and I hadn't really made any plans. Something an old salt told me right here on the old fish-tails some time ago, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail" Famous last words that allways hold true.
Well, I hadn't made any plans that's for sure as I headed to the south end of Amelia Island to do some surf fishing. Maybe I can score some whiting.
I headed towards my favorite spot and lo and behold it's covered up with surf fishermen everywhere. The fog was heavy with maybe 100 yards of visibility at the most, so I headed north up the beach until I found a spot I could get in.
I soaked the mud minnows for a couple of hours. Something was stealing them off the hook, but would never actually hook up. I was using circle hooks as usual, but I never saw the rod tips twitch. Weird.
As it turns out, the fishing was not good not only for myself, but many of the others out there with the exception of a few that got there when the time was right, early. I didn't see anyone have any real hookups, an occasional whiting come in. As I left I stopped and talked to a few folks and they weren't doing much better, with a few whiting and some drum. One had caught a trout. Those that arrived early had scored 10 to 12 whiting along with some nice drum. Well, you know how it is, "The early bird catches the worm". I showed up late, but it was still nice getting out there.
Got a report? Let us know how you're doing.
